Antique skin blanket

4 July 2008

A lady in Perth, Western Australia, possesses an antique blanket made of skins which she believes to be more than 120 years old. She would like to find out more about the blanket and wonders if there are any specialists in her region of the world who might be able to advise.

She is considering getting it DNA tested but this is very expensive and someone else has told her that if the method of tanning can be identified it might help in telling the age of the blanket. She has also had some feedback from people who have seen it who believe that it is a relic of the settlers/aboriginal days of around 1850. If there is anyone out there with an interest in such matters who think they might be able to help please email sdavy@leathermag.com and I will pass on your messages.
