Dissent in ostrich camp

11 September 2002

There seems to be some dissent in the International Ostrich Association. According to the latest Ostrich Products Newsletter, Pieter Strydom, the current IOA chairman has instructed the organisers of the World Ostrich Congress, the Polish Ostrich Association, to remove Steve Warrington of ostriches online from the guest speakers list and to place himself instead. Alan B Stables, editor of the newsletter, says: 'Steve Warrington, the mastermind behind Ostriches online, has opened new markets for most ostrich products with sales offices both in the US and Europe. 'Pieter Strydom on the other hand is a trader who uses his influence as the International Ostrich Association (IOA) chairman to put forward his views - which coincidentally include dumping cheap ostrich meat into Europe to try to block the development of an ostrich industry outside South Africa and to have a controlled supply of ostrich skins to ensure high prices for those skins.' The IOA comes in for much criticism. Just one complaint was that when a list of 'international' tanneries was requested, only companies from South Africa were included. The World Ostrich Congress is being held from September 26-29, 2002. For an application form or a programme, contact: alani@wanadoo.es
