Jakarta show highlights local products

15 November 2007

The Indo Leather and Footwear Fair 2007 took place at the Jakarta International Expo in July. Organised by Kristamedia, the fair comprised two halls of finished goods manufacturers, footwear machinery, tanners and chemicals companies including Buckman Laboratories and C&E India.

The collaboration of the Italian Trade mission (ICE) in Jakarta encouraged a strong presence from Italian companies such as Escomar and Mosconi but largely regional agents exhibited on behalf of the main players. Indonesian companies represented at the exhibition included automotive leather manufacturers Elegant Car Interior and many footwear producers offering sandals and flip flops. A fashion show highlighted the best of the footwear and leathergoods available at the fair. Womenswear collections mixed traditional prints and styles with leather accessories while in the menswear ranges, the traditional look featuring long line beige jackets was given a touch of urban streetwear. On the footwear stands there was a distinct trend towards fish leather such as Tilapia. Many of the footwear and leathergoods were available to purchase direct from the stands. At the moment this is still a very regional fair with just 20% of exhibitors overseas companies. However, the exhibition centre offers modern facilities and is an excellent platform for those wishing to contact the Indonesian industry. A local translator may come in very useful! According to David of Kristamedia, the second edition attracted 245 exhibitors, 150 of which were leather, tanneries, and finished goods with the remainder being chemicals, machinery and components. He told Leather International that the fair has increased on the second edition, but there is still a need to grow further. ‘European companies need to know that Indonesia is an Asian power with a population of 225 million potential consumers.’ The next edition will be held from August 12-14, 2008.
