New outbreak of avian influenza in South Africa

18 October 2004

After the original outbreak of avian influenza, strain H5N2, in Somerset East in South Africa, a quarantine zone was put up within a radius of 30 kms, in an attempt to contain the disease. A new outbreak has been found in Fort Brown, north of Grahamstown, which is outside this quarantine zone. This farm had apparently exchanged birds with an effected Somerset East farm, prior to the original outbreak. Source: Ostrich Products Newsletter
