New retanning resin from Chimont

16 February 2003

Chimotan JB is a retanning resin from Chimont International SpA. It is a modified polyphenol based polymer, neutralised, in aqueous solution. The characteristics of Chimotan JB make it ideal for chrome leather retannage. It confers a full, round and compact touch to the leather and the grain remains firm and dry. Chimont recommend using Chimotan JB in a short float after neutralisation at a temperature not exceeding 40°C. The product fixes itself to the leather during processing, due to a strong affinity of the reactive groups with the dermic fibres. Dyeing skins with Chimotan JB allows better saturation and purity of colours compared with traditional synthetic or natural tannins. Chimotan JB is compatible with other retanning products and may be introduced in the process either before or after the introduction of other products. It is a viscous liquid, dark brown in colour with a pH of 5.5 +- 0.5. It is soluble and anionic. When making waterproof articles, Chimotan JB can be used as the principle retanning agent without danger of interference with resistances imparted by oils used in the waterproofing process.
