Private sector appeal

18 September 2001

About 4,000 out of the 25,000 workers have quit the Leather and Footwear Corporation of Viet Nam (Leaprodexim) to work for private enterprises and foreign-invested enterprises, according to general director Nguyen Khac Thanh. Though the leather company invested VND4,000 billion (US$267,000) in upgrading equipment and technology in the 1992-2000 period, the quality of the equipment and technology is still described as mediocre. The number of enterprises that have six to ten production lines account for just 20% of the total number under Leaprodexim.
