Professor Tony Covington

26 November 2009

Tony Covington, Emeritus Professor of Leather Science, British School of Leather Technology (BSLT), The University of Northampton, has published his first book entitled ‘Tanning Chemistry: The Science of Leather’ on June 30 by the Royal Society of Chemistry. The publication encompasses the chemistries and mechanisms of tanning, together with the latest thinking on the fundamental principles of collagen stabilisation. It is the only current text on tanning science.

Professor Covington also recently won the prestigious 2009 International Union of Leather Technologists and Chemists Societies’ (IULTCS) Merit Award for Excellence in the Leather Industry.
Professor Covington will receive his award in October at the 30th annual IULTCS conference in Beijing. The award was established in 2004 and is the highest recognition of excellence made by the IULTCS.
He commented: ‘My reaction to the award is great pleasure in the personal honour which is a culmination of my career. I am aware of the debt I owe to my students and colleagues, so the award reflects well on the activities within the BSLT and The University of Northampton. It is particularly gratifying that the citation makes reference to the lasting value of my research – that is all any scientist can ask for.’
