Quanzhou authorities close many tanneries

25 May 2011

According to a report on chinaleather.org, 79 tanneries with production capacity of less than 100,000 pieces annually will be closed in 2011 by the local authorities in Quanzhou city. Quanzhou is located in a coastal region south-west of China.

The closures are in accordance with Chinese environmental protection requirements. As well as the tanneries, 32 papermaking plants and 24 factories for textile printing and dyeing located in the city are also required to close.

The city sets the targets to cut discharge of effluent generated by leather making, papermaking, printing and dying sectors.

In the future more plants in other sectors are going to be closed down for environmental reasons around Quanzhou.
