Responding to the PTA

15 October 2003

I would like to react to the request by the Pakistan Tanners Association for the imposition of a 25% import duty on garment leather as reported in the August issue of Leather. I would also like to refer to my exchange of points of view on the same subject with the former PTA president who wanted the EU to abolish or reduce the 8% import duty on Pakistani finished calf leathers. I don't know how others see this but to me it seems that the PTA wants to have its cake and eat it all in contradiction with its own beliefs and a pure attempt at protectionism. Sam Setter
