Russian cattle breeders added additional capacity to accommodate 1,400 cattle in the first quarter of this year, compared with new capacity for 600 cattle in the first quarter in 2005, according to the Interfax news agency. Russia's Agriculture Ministry reports that on April 1 this year, there were 22.2 million cattle on farms in Russia, a decrease of 6.2% compared with the number on the same date in 2005. The production of cattle for slaughter in the first quarter of this year was 9% lower than in the same period in 2005.
