S Korea limit on US beef cattle

20 June 2008

Apologizing for his April decision to resume imports of US beef from cattle of all ages, South Korean President Lee Myung-bak has promised to limit US imports to beef from animals under 30 months of age.

Speaking in a nationally televised address, Lee said he told President Bush earlier this month that Korea ‘would not be able to import US beef' if demands about restrictions on older cattle were not met. According to meatingplace.com, Lee's remarks come as trade officials from both nations have been meeting in Washington, although no conclusion has yet been reached.
