SATRA safety investment

5 March 2004

SATRA has increased its test capabilities to coincide with the introduction of new standards for all safety footwear being sold in Europe. A new toe cap impact machine, developed in-house by the UK technology centre, has been installed at SATRA's new site to help cope with a variety of tests detailed in this new performance criteria. The new machine is computer controlled and operates with an integral speed sensor. This allows it to automatically calculate and display the impact energy applied to the test specimen. A motorised lift uses a belt drive system to move the striker carriage to a pre-set height above the sample toe cap and a new bearing design ensures that frictional losses are minimised. A versatile drop carriage assembly enables the machine to be easily configured to comply with a range of standards such as those demanded for the European, North American and Canadian markets. The machine will now supersede SATRA's current model (STD 409). 'Ever greater demands are being made on footwear that is expected to protect wearers in industrial environments. This investment supplements existing SATRA-made machinery to help cope with these demands for a wide range of personal protective equipment', says SATRA safety specialist Peter Doughty. More details about the new machine are available from e-mail: equip.sales@satra.co.uk
