Sky Fat accused of wetland pollution

16 April 2012

The Jinja-based Sky Fat tannery has been ordered to close operations for allegedly disposing its wastewaters into a nearby wetland area. Collins Oluya, the assistant commissioner wetlands management, said the tannery had extended their boundary into the lake.

‘Although they have a EIA (Environment Impact Assessment) certificate, they should be closed. They are not complying with the mitigation measures given to them,’ he said. However, Sun Jun, the manager Sky Fat tannery, dismissed the allegations.

Oluya said: ‘They should be closed as a more detailed environmental audit is done. They know what to do but are choosing to be adamant.’

Oluya is part of a team training the ‘Environmental Police’, who will enforce National Environment Management Authority’s (Nema) mandate of environment protection.

As part of the field training for the police officers, they will visit timber yards, bars, forests and wetlands and tanneries to ensure adherence to environmental laws.
