Slaughter 1.4% ahead for memorial & July 4 holidays

In the four week period ended May 24, Federally Inspected Slaughter amounted to an average kill of 708,750, up from the 660,000 of our previous report and also up on the 684,250 average of the same period last year. FIS was running at 1.4% over the 2007 figures.
US Secretary of Agriculture, Ed Schafer, has said he intends to ban the slaughter of downer cattle at federally inspected facilities.


Export sales of raw hides for the four weeks under review showed China in their regular top position with 1,145,000 (1,135,900, 967,500, 780,200, 692,700) hides. Hong Kong was again in third place with 219,000 (202,900, 112,500, 114,000, 40,200), giving the region a combined total of 1,364,000 (1,338,800, 1,080,000, 894,200, 732,900). Korea was again in second place with 514,900 (567,400, 519,600, 424,799, 442,000). Taiwan took the fourth slot with 127,700 (119,300, 178,300, 226,900, 78,599) followed by Vietnam with 112,700 (64,800, 126,000, 70,300, 33,300). Mexico came next with 104,300 (80,200, 137,900, 150,300, 78,000); Thailand 91,000 (103,000, 136,800, 54,300, 49,200); Italy 30,100 (38,700, 38,300, 46,500, 133,100); Japan 22,100 (48,800, 50,300, 57,700, 68,400). Brazil came in for 13,200 (4,800), ahead of Canada with 12,200 (3,200, 2,400, 2,100, 2,300); Spain  1,800 (1,600, 1,100), and Türkiye 700. In addition to the raw hides, Hong Kong and Taiwan also purchased 8,300 kip skins. Japan also took 6,700 kip and Italy 2,800 calf skins. Sales of wet-blue for export during the period under review showed China and Hong Kong with a combined total of 206,700 (325,700, 300,600, 139,900, 147,700). Italy followed with 164,500 (41,000, 9,500, 32,000, 72,600) and Taiwan with 70,500 (37,600, 84,900, 81,700, 15,500). Mexico was next in line with 54,700 (76,300, 79,300, 68,100, 57,700) followed by the Dominican Republic with 18,700 (58,700, 69,600, 70,200, 58,600). Korea contracted for 9,400 (31,100, 18,100, 49,500, 10,800), Thailand 6,500 (19,500);  Vietnam 10,000 (21,100; (10,900, 10,400, 35,700);  Uruguay 2,000; and India 900 (2,000). Last month Hong Kong and China purchased a total of 4,586,500lb of wet-blue splits. This time round Hong Kong and China took a combined total of 1,705,200lb. Vietnam ordered 792,000lb one week and cancelled the next leaving Türkiye with 100,000lb.
