28 January 2011

AAQTIC, the Argentine Leather Industry Chemists and Technicians Association, have published a new report on the current situation of slaughter and livestock numbers in Argentina on their website. The report is available in both English and Spanish.

According to a press release from AAQTIC on January 27, 2010 witnessed a nosedive in the Argentine with overall slaughter down by some 25% compared with 2009. It was the worst ever annual decline.

Livestock numbers in the country dropped by over 15% compared with 2008.

Per capita beef consumption dropped from 68kg/year to 55kg across the same period. Argentine beef exports in kilograms declined by around 50%.

Stock and slaughter are expected to have recovered in four years’ time. Nevertheless, slaughter may experience a downward trend in 2011.

These circumstances are expected to have a negative impact on the tanning sector, with raw materials becoming more costly and scarce over the past year.
