Smit & Zoon DMF statement
14 April 2009Furniture and footwear available on the market in several countries have been identified as the cause of damage to the health of consumers. According to clinical tests the health damage was caused by the chemical dimethylfumarate (DMF), a biocide preventing moulds that may deteriorate leather furniture or footwear during storage or transport in a humid climate.
For this reason the European Commission has decided that products containing DMF are prohibited to be placed on the market as from 1 May 2009. Products which are already placed on the market have to be withdrawn as from the same date. (Commission decision 2009/251/EC)
Smit & Zoon confirms that none of its products contain DMF nor did they contain this substance in the past. All Smit & Zoon products comply with the European legislation and can thus be safely used to produce leather for the European market.
