Taiwanese tanners meet in China

30 October 2009

The recently formed Taiwanese International Leather Association (TILA) met on September 19 in Dongguan, China to discuss a number of industry related issues. A total of 94 delegates discussed the implications of ICHSLTA’s contract 6 following the ICHSLTA’s council meeting in Shanghai at the beginning of September as well as other trade and technical issues facing Taiwanese tanners in Taiwan and Greater China.

Tanners agreed that international contracts should be honoured by both parties and agreed a 3% margin on shipment weight but reiterated that the number of pieces should be 100% correct. It was also suggested to add a ‘trust’ clause be added into the contract as in enclosure F of contract 6. Visit www.ichslta.org for further details on contract 6.
TILA president, Jen yang, ceo of the Tyche group told delegates that the ‘low tide’ mark of the global recession had past and that he was anticipating a better fourth quarter for the industry.
A presentation on recent advances in clean leather production (Clean leather production and the reuse of solid waste) was presented by Liu Xu, president, Zhaofu tannery. He discussed ways of reusing solid waste from tanning processes, such as making protein powder by extracting hair protein through basifying-heating-condensing-drying the hair and limed fleshings, which were generated in beamhouse processes. The end-product could then be made into dark shaded retanning fillers. They were using this process in their Jianyin tannery he said. With the treatment of this procedure, the problem of odour from the wastewater treatment plant was solved and improved.
He also highlighted that the recycling and reuse of chrome shavings could be treated the same method via basifying and heating to extract the protein from collagen fibre, and removing chrome liquid. The protein extracts in this process can be used for lighter shaded retanning fillers, which they use in their Lishui tannery.
The patent right of this technology is shared by Sichuan University and Zhaofu tannery. TILA members were welcomed to visit the tanneries to see this technology in operation.
At the end of meeting there was a formal dinner for all delegates and the host of the next meeting, Lai Qingquan, director, Huangcheng tannery invited all TILA members come to the next event in Zhaoqing, March 2010.
