Tannery workers reach pay settlement

11 July 2012

Workers in the leather tanning sector have settled for a 7% pay rise, the South Africa Clothing and Textile Workers' Union (Sactwu) said on July 6. The increase came into effect on July 6 for about 2300 workers in the sector.

The deal was in line with a two-year wage agreement reached last year between Sactwu and the tanning sector employers.
Sactwu co-ordinator Lawrence Xola said the negotiations began last year.
‘The negotiations were difficult but we were able to reach an agreement’, he said.
