Tanning Tech update

Tanning Tech, the worldwide showcase for leather making machinery and chemical technology, is set to take place October 28-31 2003. It will be held at the Bologna Fiera, Italy alongside the Lineapelle fair. The fair will open from 9am-6pm and is organised by the 'Italian footwear and leather machinery manufacturers association' (Assomac). Going against the trend of the considerable difficulties looming over the leather and footwear sectors, especially in the Euro zone, the leading tanning technology event has surpassed last year's levels according to Assomac. This year they have 260 exhibitors and for the first time the exhibition space will exceed 15,050 sq m net. There will be exhibitors from some 25 countries, three more than last year. This year also sees the inclusion of four companies from China, India, Iran and Uruguay. They will be present for the first time in the chemicals hall. In keeping with tradition, as well as the 'individual' visitors, Assomac will also be hosting delegations from Bangladesh, China, Egypt and Vietnam. Operator groups are also expected from India and Iran. The usual representation from Aflai-Facic, the African federation of leather associations will also be present. They will be presenting the forthcoming Meet in Africa event scheduled for 6-9 October 2004 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. In addition, Egyptian representatives will update the sector on the new tanning district of Robaiki, destined for the tanneries currently located in Cairo. Construction work is underway. According to the latest statistics, Italy, the leading country in the tanning sector, has witnessed a decrease of 0.7% in exports for the first four months of 2003 (-33.2% in Europe, +14.8% in Asia and +15.7% in the USA). Tannery production for the first quarter of 2003 increased in the bovine sector, but fell considerably in the calf and sheep/goatskin sectors. Halls: 33 and 35 will house machinery, accessories and automation systems' exhibitors and hall 34 will house leather chemical producers.
