Two tanning factories close

7 December 2001

Two dyeing and tanning factories in Phra Pradaeng district were closed mid-November for polluting the water and air. Golden Group and Wilaibut, located in tambon Bang Prong, will remain closed until corrections are made, officials said. The closure was authorised by the provincial industrial office after the factories were inspected by Pra-theep Chongsuebtham, the district chief, and other officials. About 150 residents of tambon Bang Hua Sua earlier gathered at Wat Bang Fai school to submit a complaint to the district chief. They said the two factories, which were under the supervision of the tambon Bang Prong administrative organisation, affected the health of 700 families by releasing untreated water into waterways and emitting black smoke. They said many villagers were suffering from skin diseases and respiratory problems. The villagers dispersed when the factories were ordered to close.
