Vietnamese job losses
21 October 2008The Vietnam Leather and Footwear Association (Lefaso) says that around 40,000 workers have lost their jobs since anti-dumping duties were introduced on Vietnamese leather-capped shoes by the European Union in 2006, according to the Vietnamese News Agency.
Lefaso added that bankruptcy has threatened 100 out of the 400 leather and leather shoe manufacturers in Vietnam since the duties were introduced. Vietnamese leather shoe exports to the EU totalled more than 120 million pairs in 2005 but fell to 107 million pairs in 2006 and to 91 million pairs in 2007, according to Lefaso figures.
