- New ecological demands in leather finishingDr Stefan Adams, Development of Auxiliaries for Finishing BASF, Ludwigshafen discusses how ecological factors are increasingly becoming the driving force for new developmentsPublished: 15 August, 2003
One of the reasons for this is that the authorities have acknowledged the general hazards facing consumers and the environment, and they have acted accordingly. For instance, legislation governing food-contact and consumer goods in Germany (Lebensmittel- und Bedarfsgegenständegesetz) has led to a ban on azo dyes that are capable of releasing MAK amines. Other bans and demands for compulsory labelling in the making and marketing of leather have been introduced in the meantime. These include the following legislation:
- Improved hide quality and rapid unhairingDespite the failure of the FBO project, the concept was well ahead of its time and a great deal of valuable technological insight was given a test run. Andrew G Gehring of the Eastern Regional Research Center presented a paper at the recent IULTCS Congress in Cancun. His co-authors were David G Bailey, John C Crowther, Gary L DiMaio, Robert L Dudley and William N MarmerPublished: 15 August, 2003
The quality of hides suffers from their treatment by the packing industry, who at best see it as a byproduct of meat production. This could be averted if the meat packing company were to develop a vertically integrated cattle operation in which the hide is a product in its own right. A key component of that innovative operation is the rapid unhairing of stunned cattle carcases prior to flaying in the slaughterhouse. Since it removes hair-associated manure, dirt and microorganisms, rapid unhairing greatly reduces the cross-contamination of microorganisms on the hide to the meat.

- Leather imports continue to growFor many in the US leather industry, the combination of a weak national economy, a sluggish world economy, low-valued Chinese currency, the war with Iraq, post September 11 travel and the SARS epidemic have led to significant revenue losses. Despite cattle hide wettings being up 19% - 16.4 million cattle hides were soaked in 2002 compared with 13.8 million in 2001 - there was much gloom in the leather footwear segment of the business. - Adapting to remain competitiveThe shoe upper leather manufacturing market in Spain has become extremely competitive in recent years mainly due to cheaper foreign imports flooding into the market and the relocation of key accounts. For major players such as Incusa, part of the Lederval Group, the choice was simple. Either continue to lose orders or restructure the business and provide specific value added products. Naturally they chose the latter. Martin Ricker reportsPublished: 15 August, 2003

Prices rose steeply in the first week of the four-week period ended 26 June. The increases continued through week two, with prices levelling off towards the end of the month. The sudden rise in prices has made Korean tanners step aside, for a while at least, but they will no doubt re-enter the market once prices are more attractive. Even though it is a quiet time of year, Korean tanners still import a large amount of raw hides, and when they return to their normal purchasing levels, this is likely to push prices higher again.
