    While it is too early to know the full effects of the massive earthquake that hit China, according to Hong Kong's South China Morning Post, even the province of Guangdong, well outside the stricken area, is affected.

    The cities of Guangzhou and Dongguan, both well known as major footwear production centres, are in the province.

    At Sheba Tannery, the only tannery in the Tigray region of Ethiopia, work is already underway on a US$26 million expansion aimed at boosting production and employment in the northern region. Sheba Tannery, located in Wukro 35km north of Mekelle, is owned by EFFORT, the Endowment Fund for the Rehabilitation of Tigray.

  • Duties likely to be slashed worldwide

    Leather and leathergoods exporters could see decisions slashing tariffs on their goods worldwide this year, as the World Trade Organisation's (WTO) Doha Development Round approaches its conclusion. WTO director general Pascal Lamy has directed senior trade officials to start debating swapping liberalisation concessions for trading industrial goods (including leather, hides and products made from them) with those for food, drink and services. This should start the final stage of the round, which was launched in 2001, and key decisions could be made as early as July.

    Antimony is a chemical element in the periodic table that has the symbol Sb (Latin: stibium, meaning ‘mark') and atomic number 51. Metalloid antimony has four allotropic forms. The stable form of antimony is a white metalloid. Yellow and black antimony are unstable non-metals. Antimony is used in flame proofing, paints, ceramics, enamels, and a wide variety of alloys, electronics and rubber.

The French Tanning Federation has placed a lot of emphasis on companies' consumption of water. In addition, CTC has launched a large-scale project with the aim of better controlling waste water from the leather production chain.

  • Agricultural strike hits tannery sector

    A four-month agricultural strike in Argentina has had a devastating effect on the tanning sector. The action by producers of grains, (mainly soya beans), was sparked by the government's decision to raise tax on soya exports to 44%, up from 35% in March and 27% last October. This is in addition to a 33% tax on profits.

    Slovakia's Statistical Office reports that the production of leather and leather products in Slovakia in the first five months of this year was 21.3% lower than in the same period in 2007.

    The meeting of Assomac, the national association of Italian manufacturers of footwear, leathergoods and tannery machines, brought to a close the series of meetings focussing on this field.

    The meeting was held in Vigevano on Friday 27 June at the association's headquarters. In his speech, the Chairman, Giulio Tandura, described 2007 as "a relatively quiet year. The inevitable fall in exports was contained, resulting in a figure of -1.49%" but there is still serious concern about the trend of activities in the first half of  2008.
