  • Letter from Dr C Money

    Dear Dr Lampard,
I couldn’t stop smiling after I read ‘Greatest Leather Scientists’ published in the October 2009 edition of Leather International (page 28)! It was a great honour to be included in a list with Procter and Wilson etc. What you wrote captured what I tried to achieve. I tried to do good, useful science to overcome industry problems, especially environmental issues. I have thought about my career in leather research a lot since reading the article. The most rewarding things were the many friendships and seeing developments that I was involved in being taken up by the industry.

    Dear Dr Naviglio,
Thank you for taking the time to write a letter on the subject of Leather Chemists. You are, of course, quite correct in all your comments, and I agree that certainly Professor A Simoncini, should have been in that list - my apologies for his omission.

    Dear Dr Lampard
I am a senior researcher at the Stazione Sperimentale per l’Industria delle Pelli e delle Materie Concianti in Naples, Italy (SSIP). I have been in the past acting scientific manager at the Italian research institute for leather (SSIP).
I have read with interest your article about the ‘Greatest Leather Scientists’ (October 2009, page 28). In general, I agree with you about the names that you have included. In fact, those who know scientific literature relating to the tanning process are conscious of the great contribution that Procter, Wilson, Gustavson, Heidemann and so on have given to leather science.

    Dear Editor,
As the president of the first edition of Tanning Tech held in Milan back in 1995, I am writing to your readers about the important discussions taking place in Italy among the tannery machinery manufacturers (and Tanning Tech exhibitors).

    Dear editor,
My office phone has not stopped ringing, my mailbox is full ever since the ban on dimethyl fumarate (DMF) came into effect. Anxious customers have been requesting me to mail or fax the test report and the custom declaration certificate that silica gel is free from DMF as their shipments have been stuck at various ports all across Europe.

The start of the new year saw the handing over of key roles in the International Union of Leather Technologists and Chemists Societies. This is what incoming president Elton Hurlow has to say.

  • When should a market be open?
    Published:  04 September, 2006

I have read Gustavo Gonzalez-Quijano's letter to Leather with interest. In my view it is in the interest of all developing countries to open their markets to a well defined number of foreign products provided they don't produce these themselves.

I would like to express a long held (& long overdue) sentiment of deep appreciation for the continued standard of excellence of your Leather magazine. The recent further improvements to the presentation and production are simply first class. You are in a class of your own now.

  • Damaged hides - a positive way forward?
    Published:  04 September, 2006

Dung clad hides have always been a bone of contention and caused endless problems to both tanner and end user, not to mention attempting to sell the limed splits for collagen entering into the food chain.

Following our recent article on fair trade in the March issue of Leather International (pages 76-77), we received a letter from Gustavo Gonzalez-Quijano, Cotance, who takes issue with some of the comments made at the end and points out that:

Poll

Where from the following options do you see the leather making industry most likely heading in 10 years time?

  • Leather making will continue to be dominated by China and India - led by consumer demand?
  • Pressure from the environment 'hide miles' will mean that tanning/finishing reverts back to source?
  • Countries such as Brazil and the US etc with large raw material populations will control the market?
  • African nations will get their act together and will become the new centre of leather making?
