Finishing with LANXESS
LANXESS have a number of new finishing products available and here we give details of just a few. Aquaderm XL 70, a solvent-containing formulation of a reactive isocyanate, improves the physical fastness properties of aqueous finishes. It is added undiluted to ready-to-use finish formulations immediately before use. Aquaderm XL 70 is particularly suitable for glossy leathers, as it does not impair the gloss level of finishes.
Aquaderm Matting Agent HPM-N is an aqueous, solvent-free matting agent in an aliphatic pu dispersion for high-performance leather finishes. It is used together with all aqueous polymer dispersions from the Bayderm Finish, Aquaderm Finish and Hydrholac range in particular for NMP-free top coat formulations. This matting agent imparts an extremely high degree of dullness to the leathers. When cross-linked with isocyanate-based products such as Aquaderm XL 50, excellent fastness properties can be obtained even with light coatings.
Aquaderm Matting Agent STM is an aqueous, solvent-free matting agent for leather finishes with a particularly pleasant handle which meets high fastness requirements. It is used together with suitable polymer dispersions from the Bayderm Finish, Aquaderm Finish and Hydrholac ranges to obtain very dull, aqueous, NMP-free top lacquer formulations, especially for car and furniture upholstery leathers. Leathers finished in combination with Bayderm Finish 85 UD, Bayderm Bottom DLV and Aquaderm Matting Agent STM have a very pleasant, non-squeaky and smooth surface touch. Cross-linked with isocyanate-based products such as Aquaderm XL 50, even the toughest fastness requirements can be met.
The range consists of organic Bayderm colours BO and inorganic Bayderm colours CO, which are concentrated, fine-particle-sized pigment preparations. They have a low binder content (which is synthetic) and propylene-glycol-mono-methyl-ether-acetate (PMA) as a solvent. A lightfast, film-forming polymer can be used as a binder. Bayderm colours BO/CO only contain ecologically-sound pigments. The pigments are carefully selected to ensure excellent fastness properties, in particular fastness to light, perspiration, acids and alkalis, resistance to heat, plating and migration. Bayderm colours BO/CO retain fastness during overspraying, ie they do not bleed when oversprayed with solvent-reduced top coats or aqueous emulsion lacquers. Despite the high pigment concentration, they are free-flowing, easy to handle and can be metered by volume.
Bayderm Finish 66 UD is an aqueous dispersion of a lightfast, hydrolysis-resistant polyurethane for finishes with high physical fastness properties. Because of its high light stability and hydrolysis resistance, Bayderm Finish 66 UD is particularly suitable for leathers which require excellent physical fastness properties. As a medium-hard polyurethane dispersion, it can be included in base coat formulations and effect finishes and can also be used as the main component in aqueous top coats. Bayderm Finish 66 UD is miscible with all anionic aqueous finishing products.
Isocyanate cross-linking agents such as Aquaderm XL 50, XL 70 or XL 80 have proved particularly effective for improving fastness properties.
Bayderm Finish 91 UD is an aqueous, anionic, NMP-free polyurethane dispersion for use in automotive and furniture leather top coats. It forms a film that offers excellent physical fastness properties such as high abrasion resistance. When included in base coats, Bayderm Finish 91 UD brings about a noticeable improvement in print retention and helps prevent the fresh finish from being cut through on embossing.
Bayderm Finish HPV-C is a polyurethane dispersion modified with an acrylic copolymer. It was specially developed for use in high performance top coats for car upholstery leather. It can also be used in combination with a variety of acrylic and PUD resins to enhance the top coat performance. Bayderm Finish HPV-C does not contain N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP).
Bayderm Finish MT-A-T is an aqueous preparation of polyurethane and acrylic dispersions for use as a semi-opaque top coat for furniture upholstery leather. It provides good embossing and flow-out properties, excellent dry and wet rub fastness properties, that can be further increased when cross-linked with Bayderm Fix A or Aquaderm XL 50. It can be applied easily by spraying and the leathers can be stacked right after drying. Beside the smooth surface touch, Bayderm Finish MT-A-T provides excellent dry-drumming properties, avoiding grey break, even if the leathers are dry-drummed for a long period of time.
Baygen Fondo Compatto LV is an aqueous preparation of polyurethane and acrylic resins and selected auxiliaries. This product was especially developed as a base coat compound for patent leathers finished with the Baygen patent system. It can be applied either by spraying or reverse rollercoating. Baygen Fondo Compatto LV imparts very high flexometer values that are currently demanded by the patent leather market. Furthermore it is very adhesive and produces a slightly dull film of medium hardness and high elasticity.
Baygen Hardener LRF is a lightfast cross-linking agent for organic solvent reduced Baygen lacquer formulations for leathers with good lightfastness. The company's well-known Baygen Hardener LR has been, due to the excellent lightfastness and very good flex fastness properties, the proven hardener of choice for the production of bright-coloured patent leathers. Baygen Hardener LRF maintains these characteristics with improved flex fastness properties.
Euderm Compacto CF 07 is a preparation of acrylic dispersions, butadiene and selected auxiliaries. It is developed as a ready-to-use base coat compound for the finishing of corrected grain furniture upholstery and split leather. Euderm Compacto CF 07 only requires the addition of pigments and provides an excellent coverage. The product can be applied during reverse coating or airless spraying and imparts excellent embossing properties to the finish. Improvements in both print retention and cut through resistance can be seen.
