Chinese invest in Ugandan tannery
A new tannery is due to open shortly in Jinja, Uganda, processing raw hides into leather for Chinese company, Skyfat Tannery Company Limited. Skyfat have invested $ 5 million in the facility and aim at adding value to Uganda's hides for export to China.
Company managing director, Sun Jun, said that the tannery has the capacity to process between 1,500 and 2,000 hides/day and plans to employ 400 people. 'He arrived with a number of experts from China to install the machines but then plans to train Ugandans to do the work. Already 50 Ugandans are working. Sun Jun decided to invest in Uganda in the belief that it is a strategic country surrounded by the new markets in the Democratic Republic of Congo and southern Sudan.
