Chinese invest in Ugandan tannery
A new tannery is due to open shortly in Jinja, Uganda, processing raw hides into leather for Chinese company, Skyfat Tannery Co Ltd. Skyfat have invested $5 million in the facility and aim at adding value to Uganda's hides for export to China.
Managing director, Sun Jun, said that the tannery has the capacity to process between 1,500 - 2,000 hides/ day and plans to employ 400 people. 'Sun Jun arrived with a number of experts from China to install the machines and plans to train Ugandans to do the work (50 are currently employed). Sun Jun decided to invest in Uganda due to its strategic location surrounded by the new markets in the Democratic Republic of Congo and southern Sudan.
