Habeeb tanning company of Chennai process 5 million sq ft of bovine hides per month using 60% domestic and 40% imported hides. The tannery employs 150 people and is currently working at 80% capacity.
40% of the company's production is exported to Europe and Asia while 60% is used for making shoe uppers and shoes for export to Europe. They maintain their international presence by exhibiting at Lineapelle and APLF.
The tannery is equipped with its own effluent treatment plant. Habeeb Tanning Company management state that quality, consistency and credit facilities are the advantages they offer. They constantly strive to improve quality via modernisation of their tannery and shoe factories. Delivery and transportation methods are also being improved.
According to Habeeb tanneries, the selection standard offered by Indian hides is not encouraging. Competition from other south-east Asian countries offering low prices have affected sales.
