Agra tanneries forced to move
The High Court has given notice to the Agra district authorities for not shifting leather tanneries from the city's Khatikpara area. A petition, filed by Adarsh Khatik Samaj Sewa Samiti, will affect approximately 65 tanneries in the region.
Notice has been issued to the commissioner, district magistrate, senior superintendent of police, officials of Agra Development Authority and the pollution control board. For a long time, ecologists have been asking for the tanneries to be relocated so that effluent can be treated before being released to the river.
