An impressive client list
Another Somerset leather business retains a diverse and impressive client list which ranges from the Royal Household to the ‘Death Eaters' in the Harry Potter films.
Nestled in the former premises of the National School in Street, C A Cornish draw on the leather skills and craft in the area to provide designers and artists with leather bindings and trimmings of quality and durability. The primary product is a flat piece of leather for piping, decorative piping.
All leathers, be it pigskin, calf, deer, are sourced from Italy or the UK. Some are specifically tanned according to their end usage and colour requirements. An example of a high performance product is reflective flameproof leather for protective fire brigade uniforms.
The company offer bespoke products which meet the exact colour and thickness specified by the client. Founder Clive Cornish very much enjoys being involved in the design process, but the company are also able to produce products from artwork provided by the client. While their core business is binding for bags, they have also been successful in creating accessories such as belts, some of which have been exhibited at London Fashion Week.
The company have firmly established themselves on the film and theatre producers' favoured suppliers list. Products have appeared in blockbuster films such as Gladiator, which starred Russell Crowe. The company's binding was wrapped round the arms of 3,000 ‘Roman soldiers' to complete their costumes.
Their leather has also been exhibited in galleries, as part of Irish artist Eva Rothschild's sculptures. They have even had a call from the Royal Household who needed binding for the edge of rugs in the state coach at Buckingham Palace. And of course they supply Owen Barry with edging for garments and accessories.
