United Kingdom
Published:  27 May, 2009

The official launch of a new website celebrating the current and historic heritage of the leather and footwear industries in the English county of Northamptonshire took place at Satra Technology Centre, Kettering on May 26.

The new website www.northamptonshireleather.com features a wealth of leather related events, news, people, historical information and current trade and consumer directories.

Although tanning and footwear manufacturing in the county (approximately 60km north of London) is hugely reduced from its peak in the mid 20th century Northamptonshire is still home to a number of world-class research and academic institutions as well as a number of famous footwear brands, particularly traditional mens welted shoes and boots, such as Church's, Jeffrey West and Barkers. It is also the location of several small niche companies producing high-value or unusual leathers and leather products. Northamptonshire has over 900 years experience in footwear and was once the world centre for the industry.

The website has been devised by Northamptonshire Enterprise Ltd. The launch included at tour of the Satra testing facilities and presentations from a range of Northamptonshire leather related companies and institutions.
