Letter to the editor

Dear Editor,
As the president of the first edition of Tanning Tech held in Milan back in 1995, I am writing to your readers about the important discussions taking place in Italy among the tannery machinery manufacturers (and Tanning Tech exhibitors).

On April 27, I contacted by email many of the Italian exhibitors who attended the 2008 edition of Tanning Tech to survey their feelings about this year’s event and asked the following:
‘According to current business and economic situation in the leather industry and according to the financial situation of our companies, do you think that it is an opportune and appropriate time to organise a 2009 edition of Tanning Tech?’
According to the results of my survey there was a clear opinion. From the Italian exhibitors 81% thought that it is not an opportune moment to organise the 2009 edition of Tanning Tech. 15% of companies think that it is a good time and 4% of companies appreciated the idea of my survey but preferred not to answer the question.
After my survey and subsequent general discussion in the trade a number of companies have decided that it is not a good time for them to exhibit at Tanning Tech 2009.
My personal opinion it is that we must protect the image of Tanning Tech and avoid a ‘poor’ edition, in terms of exhibitors and visitors. We, as a group, should start to think instead about one important edition in 2010, that can be promoted at Lineapelle this October, for example, with a Tanning Tech ‘meeting point’ where all the information about 2010 edition will be available. Visitors to Lineapelle can use the area to meet and fix an appointment with a supplier, if necessary.
Thank you for your attention, and for the opportunity to open this discussion.

Gianfranco Carnino,
Infragas Nova Impianti
