IULTCS write to CLIA about new ‘non-leather’ definitions
The IULTCS (International Union of Leather Technologists and Chemists Societies) and other leather organisations in the EU have written to the China Leather Industry Association (CLIA) to propose the redefinition of the words or phrases for ‘non-leather’ materials.
The phrase ‘synthetic leather’ might misleadingly be thought of a kind of natural leather by consumers in English speaking countries say the CLIA through their official website www.chinaleather.org reported October 29.
The definition of natural leather is that made from an animal hide or skin. The IULTCS propose to use of ‘synthetic material’ and ‘PU material’ to replace the old words and phrases such as ‘synthetic leather’, ‘PU leather’, ‘artificial leather’ and ‘man-made leather’.
‘The CLIA have urged the Chinese leather industry to pay attention to IULTCS proposal and adopt the new translation while expressing non-leather materials’, says Su Chaoying, CLIA vice president.
