Cotance have reported that member countries of the European Tanning Industry have embarked on a process of highlighting improvements in social accountability and environmental performance. The Social Partners of the Leather/Tanning Industry at European level signed in 2000 an ambitious Social Code of Conduct for the sector and in 2008 a Framework Agreement on Social & Environmental Reporting was drafted. European Tanners want to be perceived as frontrunners in social and environmental excellence say Cotance.

Following the setting up of the framework Cotance have published the National Social & Environmental Reports from Bulgaria, France, Germany, Italy, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom on their website: www.cotance.com.

Some of the reports were recently presented in joint seminars and at a recent event organised within the framework of the project. It is a first and is meant to be a baseline for regularly showing progress towards increased performance in the areas of Social & Environmental performance within the European tanning sector.
