The first day of the India International Leather (IILF) fair took on February 1 at the Chennai Trade Centre. The 26th edition is the biggest ever with over 400 exhibitors and the aisles were crowded with local and international visitors.

Most exhibitors were happy with the number and quality of visitors on the first day of the show, which takes place until February 3.

The leather industry in India is on a growth path and annual exports are worth $3.4 billion. ‘Our total export growth fell 5.5% during the period of 2009-10 but has recovered this year and we expect export growth for the next year – which finishes in April – to be around about 18% compared with the previous year’, says M Rafeeque Ahmed, Chairman, Council for Leather Exports and Chairman of the Farida Group.

The continued growth of the leather industry in India (which currently has a global market share of 3%) is underlined by the popularity of the IILF and the number of local and international exhibitors and visitors are currently growing year-on-year.
