Professor Tony Covington, School of Science and Technology for the University of Northampton has been awarded the Alsop Award in recognition for his contribution to the leather industry. The award, from the American Leather Chemists Association (ALCA), comes just weeks after the news that Professor Covington is also set to become the world’s very first Doctor of Science Degree (DSc) graduate in Leather Technology.
Professor Covington, Emeritus Professor in Leather Science at The University of Northampton, said: ‘The Alsop Award’s previous recipients are among the most important leather scientists of the last 70 years or so. The list is dominated by Americans, so I am one of only a few foreigners. To be included in this eminent list of scientists and technologists is a personal pleasure and honour, but the award also reflects the significant value the international leather community places on the University.’
Professor Covington has over 250 publications to his name and the Alsop Award is being awarded in particular recognition for his book, Tanning Chemistry. The Science of Leather, which was published by the Royal Society of Chemistry in 2009.
