Turkana abattoir is now ready
A slaughterhouse built at a cost of Sh60 million in the Turkana district of Nairobi is now ready. Construction of the slaughterhouse was jointly funded by Africa Medical Research Foundation and Terra Nova of Italy. The foundation offers medical care to people in marginalised areas while Terra Nova assists them economically.
Lomidat Meat Factory has the capacity to slaughter 400 animals daily. The slaughterhouse will be run by Lomidat Pastoral Society and will serve residents of Turkana South and North districts. The factory is located to the South of Lokichoggio, about 10 km outside the town (800 km from Nairobi).
Turkana District co-operatives officer Roger Sikulu said the factory will keep out the middle men who have exploited locals for a long time. The unscrupulous middle men have been buying cows from the area for as low as Sh5,000 and selling them for Sh40,000 to Sh50,000 in Nairobi.
