Work starts on ECCO tannery
September saw work start on the new ECCO tannery in Xiamen, China, alongside four footwear units which are already in production. ECCO opened their first Chinese footwear unit in April 2005 on a 200,000 sq m plot of land with 120,000 sq m earmarked for a possible future tannery.
The tannery is being heralded as the best designed in the world and a number of top suppliers are already on board but at the outset ECCO were undecided as to whether they would build the tannery or not. First they planned a further three identical footwear manufacturing plants on the same site, bringing capacity up to four million pairs.
It is planned to officially open the tannery just before the next ACLE fair at the end of August 2008.
