Designed to save space or be fitted into tanneries where space is premium, Vallero International have devised the Compact Drum. The manufacturers claim that the wooden drum (2 x 2m drum diameter) can save up to a metre on each dimension, making it fit into awkward areas inside tanneries.

The gearbox has been fitted at the rear and the drum rotates on a series of wheels running on each corner, underneath the drum to save space. The ring gear, gearbox and supports are replaced by guides and rollers to reduce the axial space requirement. All of the moving parts are covered with a safety cage.

The principal advantages are:

* Improved safety due to the comprehensive guarding of rotating elements

* The rotation mechanism is quieter than other drums of its size

* Compact Drum does not require concrete pillars to be installed, as it is self supported and can be manoeuvred within the tannery easily

* The layout of the drum and safety cage has been simplified in order to reduce the level of maintenance on mechanical components

Compact Drum is available in a number of sizes and can be fitted with automatic water and chemical dosing systems like any conventional drum.

The drum comes fitted with a side funnel, which has also been made narrower to save space for the addition of water and chemicals.
