Finishing plant for Cummsa

One of Mexico's largest tanners, Cummsa, is in the final stages of a new 5,000 sq m finishing area at their plant in León. The new facility has been built to allow the company to expand into the upholstery leather business.

Cummsa or Curtidos Modernos de León currently process 150,000 pieces per day mainly for all kinds of footwear. 'At the moment we produce automotive upholstery leather up to wet-blue. When the extension to the factory is completed we will be able to manufacture upholstery to the finish. We are awaiting the final shipment of new tannery machinery from Europe (Italy) and our vision is to become a finished automotive upholstery leather producer by 2005', Luis Plutarco Mejía, production manager, Cummsa, told Leather International.

2004 is also the 25th anniversary of the tannery which was founded by the current director general, Mario Alberto Moreno Muñoz. The company plan to use the opening of the finishing plant this month to celebrate the anniversary.

Today, 200 people work at the tannery making leather from raw to finish.
