A simple remedy
J P H Wojas shoemakers saw their profits rise to around Zl.1 million on revenue of Zl.48 million in 2003, a 160% increase in profits and a 9% decline in sales over 2002. 'We withdrew from working with clients who owed us money', said company president Wieslaw Wojas. 'This helped improve our results.'
The company are shifting their exports, which account for 40% of sales, from eastern to EU markets. 'Countries such as the UK, Benelux, the Czech Republic and Slovakia show great promise for us', said Aleksandra Krysiak, the head of the National Chamber of the Leather Industry. In 2004, Wojas will produce shoes worth around £1 million for Dr Martens and actively seek other international contracts. Last year, they made 10,000 pairs for Martens, while this year the figure should be closer to 50,000.
