ATC build plant in India

Published:  06 March, 2005

French leather chemical manufacturers ATC are building a new production facility in Pondicherry, approximately150 km south of Chennai. Production at the new 2.5 hectare site is due to start in June or July this year.

ATC intend to produce more than 10,000 tonnes of leather chemicals a year. This includes syntans, acrylics, binders, fatliquors and other auxiliaries that will be synthesised in the plant. The new factory will serve ATC's customer base across the whole of India with its established chemicals portfolio and new tailor-made chemicals will also be developed.

'We decided to build a plant close to the Indian market as we expect the leather industry to grow both in terms of the domestic market and exports. The new plant will also feed ATC's headquarter factory in France as well as subsidiaries in Brazil and Thailand', Jean-Pierre Gualino, president of ATC France and chairman of ATC Chemicals India Pvt Ltd, told Leather International.

The new factory, ATC Chemicals India, is owned 74% by the French company. The remaining share belongs to ATC's Indian partner Mr Raja, ATC's distributor in India for several years. The factory will be fully computerised, ISO compliant and will be manufacturing chemicals to the same specifications as those produced at ATC's headquarters in France.
