Botswana Ostrich Commission averts abattoir closure

15 August 2005

The Botswana Ostrich Commission (BOC) failed to have sufficient slaughter birds for processing through their only EU approved abattoir, and as a result it looked likely that the abattoir would be closed. Their target was 20,000 slaughter birds. However final closures have been avoided through 'progressive discussions with government, with a view to finding a lasting solution to problems affecting the development of the ostrich industry in the country', said the BOC. There are some 47 ostrich farmers operating through the abattoir.
