VCAD said the move came after Brazilian authorities scrutinised statistics listing export volumes and the prices of Vietnamese leather shoes on the Brazilian market. Brazilian authorities concluded that leather shoe import revenues from Viet Nam have not reached a level to warrant anti-dumping inspections.
Last October, Abicalçados submitted a dumping complaint against Vietnamese and Chinese shoe exporters to the BTPA, which announced its decision to begin conducting inspections on December 15, 2008.
The decision leaves China as the only defendant in Brazil's investigation. Brazil published its decision to conduct anti-dumping inspections on imports of Chinese footwear in the Federal Official Gazette on December 31, 2008.
The Viet Nam Leather and Footwear Association said the volume of footwear exported to Brazil was relatively small, reaching roughly US$50 million last year, compared with the $4.7 billion Viet Nam earned from total footwear exports last year. The Association hope that this total will rise to $6 billion in 2009.
