LWG statement on illegal deforestation

11 June 2009

The Leather Working Group (LWG) seeks to improve the footwear tanning industry by creating alignment on environmental priorities, bringing visibility to best practices and providing suggested guidelines for continual improvement.
Following a meeting held in March 2009, the group were keen to open dialogue with Greenpeace and invited them to send a representative to participate in a discussion on this issue with our member companies. It is our hope that they will accept this offer to present their findings and perspective at the next LWG meeting to be held in Lawrence, MA, USA, September 9 and 10, 2009.
The Leather Working Group is actively engaged in reducing the environmental impacts of the footwear leather supply chain in a collective and collaborative manner, and the group is interested in the contributions of Greenpeace towards that goal.
