Pakistan Leather Industry Wants Government Action

10 January 2019

In a meeting with Pakistan’s finance minister and the Federal Board of Revenue, The Pakistan Leather Garments Manufacturers & Exporters Association (PLGMEA) expressed its concerns over the steep decline in leather-related exports.

Representatives from the PLGMEA voiced that the "leather industry will further plummet and potentially lose its share if the necessary actions were not taken, keeping in view how other countries have significantly improved their product portfolio in leather industry".

PLGMEA stated that the government has to further facilitate the exporters of leather garments and leather goods as the sector has "immense potential”, and has been historically the country’s second largest industry.

"Other countries have improved their facilities, which has meant that competition has become fierce, putting Pakistan at risk of losing its future business to new players in the leather game,” the local representatives concluded.
