Tough times for Italian leather makers

They said that production is ‘down down down' and that many workers have been sent home. Other workers are rotating with their colleagues to maintain some income while at the same time alleviating the tanneries from the burden of a heavy payroll.

Also, we have heard rumours that several tannery machinery and equipment makers are close to bankruptcy while others have been taken over by other businesses in the sector. Italy has the largest number of tanneries in Europe and is regarded as the world leader in fashion and trend leathers. However, the global recession, a strong euro and increased competition for lower cost countries have hit the sector hard.
