Indian commerce minister Suresh Prabhu has hinted that the country’s central authorities will continue to support India’s leather industry through the creation of leather clusters in the state of Tamil Nadu.
“We are committed to develop this industry. And you should thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi. We approved a massive package of Rs2600 crore,” he said in an interactive session organised by the Council of Leather Exports (CLE).
Prabhu’s comments came after it was confirmed that the government was planning to introduce a package of measures to boost employment in the leather and footwear sectors, which has the potential to generate around 300,000 new jobs in three years.
The package involves implementation of central scheme, ‘Indian Footwear, Leather & Accessories Development Programme’ over three financial years from 2017-18 to 2019-20.
