A seminar on ‘Leather and Leather Goods Industry of Bangladesh: An Emerging Sector’, was recently organised by the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry.

Abdul Mazid, Member of the Planning Commission (Infrastructure Division) Muhammad Abdul Mazid observed that the leather industry is an emerging sector in the country because it has the potential for more value addition and also more scope for improvement. ‘This sector is less risky than the Ready Made Garment as its improvement potentiality is higher’, he said. He added the leather industry should be relocated to Saver from Hazari bagh in the city so that all the utilities are in one place.

Tipu Sultan, Chairman of Bangladesh Finished Leather & Leather Goods & Footwear Exporters Association said leather and leathergoods exports are expected to reach £200 million this year. The BFLLGFEA chairman said the leather and leathergoods sector is one of the major sources of export income in the country, and it is playing an important role in the national economy.
