Dr Heinz-Peter Germann, head of the Lederinstitut Gerberschule Reutlingen (LGR), Germany, gave the keynote presentation. Dr Germann’s presentation was entitled: Sustainable Leather Manufacture – Realistic Objective or Wishful Thinking? In his presentation Germann reviewed current thinking, compared the various commercially viable tanning options and looked at the future challenges for sustainable leather manufacture.
Other topics discussed under the Biotan umbrella included bio preservation and bio processing, environmental biotechnology, bio options for waste management and bio alternatives in leather products.
Germann headlines at Biotan conference
A two-day conference headed, ‘Bio-Related Innovative Options for Tannery Application’, also known as Biotan, was the theme of the Leather Research Industry Get Together (LERIG) which took place in Chennai, January 29-30. The conference, which was hosted by the CLRI, attracted around 250 delegates to review recent biotechnology to improve leather processing by making it more environmentally friendly via cleaner processing.
